Data for a Small Sampling of States

I have recently been informed by the BLS Local Area Unemployment office that these are not actually "data".   Since the data on which they are based are simply extracted from the monthly Current Population Survey, the sample sizes for a particular state, let alone county/parish or Metropolitan Statistical Area, in any one monthly survey are too small to be reliable.   So, to compensate, they have constructed an abstract semi-mathematical model, which they frequently revise in a semi-Orwellian manner ("changing history"); the reported figures going back to only 1976, and the county/parish & MSA figures back to only 1990 (meaning there is no pre-1960s government jiggering base-line) are periodically altered en masse by tweaks to the model.   As a result (and because my equipment make such massive revisions difficult & can consume a month or two), I will not be attempting to keep up with these changes, though I may or may not do so once every few years.
