"One such decline took place toward the end of the Roman empire when it was swept by barbarian invasions, famine, and plague. Another happened as the Mongol invasions of Europe, the Middle East, and China in the 13th century brought the plague to new parts of the world. Between 1200 and 1400, the population of Asia declined from around 258M to 201M; between 1340 ad 1400, Europe's population fell from 74M to 52M." --- Francis Fukuyama 2011 _The Origins of Political Order: From PreHuman Times to the French Revolution_ pg464 |

"False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for 1 imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, & water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils, except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm those only who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Can it be supposed that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity, the most important of the code, will respect the less important & arbitrary ones, which can be violated with ease & impunity, & which, if strictly obeyed, would put an end ot personal liberty -- so dear to men, so dear to the enlightened legislator -- & subject innocent persons to all the vexations that the quality alone ought to suffer? Such laws make things worse for the assaulted & better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. They ought to be designated as laws not preventive but fearful of crimes, produced by the tumultuous impression of a few isolated facts, & not by thoughtful consideration of the inconveniences & advantages of a universal decree." --- Cesare Beccaria 1770 _An Essay on Crimes & Punishments_ pp 87-88 (translated by Thomas Jefferson quoted in Wayne LaPierre 1994 _Guns, Crime, & Freedom_ pg 16) |
"The natural effort of every individual to better his own condition, when suffered to exert itself with freedom & security, is so powerful a principle, that it is alone, & without any assistance, not only capable of carrying on the society to wealth & prosperity, but of surmounting a hundred impertinent obstructions with which the folly of human laws too often encumbers its operations; though the effect of these obstructions is always more or less either to encroach upon its freedom, or to diminish its security. In Great Britain industry is perfectly secure [yah, sure]; & though it is far from being perfectly free, it is as free or freer than in any other part of Europe." --- Adam Smith _An Inquiry into the Nature & Causes of the Wealth of Nations_ book 4 chapter 5 (quoted in David S. Landes 1999 "Digression on the Corn [Grain] Trade" _The Wealth & Poverty of Nations_ pg 219) |

Except that computer people use 2 as a base raised to multiples of powers of 10, instead of 10 raised to multiples of powers of 3 because powers of 2 are handier for them, but they also want to stay somewhat close to the values of 10 most folks are used to.

"Nobody works harder, or happier, or more productively, than people working for themselves. The Cashing Out movement will signal no less than the economic decentralization of America -- for the better." --- Faith Popcorn & Lys Marigold 1991 _The Popcorn Report_ pg 55 |
