"The belt-way snipers, John Muhammad and Lee Malvo, who were linked to 18 shootings and 10 murders in the Washington DC area in 2002 October, were 2 converts to Islam. Before they were caught investigators ascribed the crimes to an 'angry white man'; the perpetrators turned out to be 2 black men. After they were caught, the media persistently referred to John Muhammad as John Williams, ignoring his conversion to Islam and consequent name change. And even after Malvo's drawings of Osama bin Laden (whom he labeled a 'servant of Allah') and ramblings about 'jihad' were revealed, authorities continued to down-play the possibility that the [initiations of force, the attacks] had anything to do with Islam or terrorism." --- Robert Spencer 2005 _The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)_ pp206-207 |

"The Portuguese strategy, doing by knowing, made good sense. Each trip built on the ones before; each time, they went a little farther; each time they noted latitude, changed their maps, & left a marker of presence. Psychological barriers made some steps more difficult... Gradually, fear yielded to reason & method. The decision to sail west, almost to the coast of South America, before going east was the most inventive & audacious of all, showing tremendous confidence in their ability to find their way... Better to keep moving than to tack & stand. No wind like a following wind; no sail like a full sail." --- David S. Landes 1999 _The Wealth & Poverty of Nations_ pg 87 |

Except that computer people use 2 as a base raised to multiples of powers of 10, instead of 10 raised to multiples of powers of 3 because powers of 2 are handier for them, but they also want to stay somewhat close to the values of 10 most folks are used to.

"The chemical instructions that pre-dispose an un-wed teen-ager to become pregnant were not designed to make her happy or successful in the complex society in which she now lives. They are just a mechanism for making sure that the information in her chromosomes is going to be copied & passed down to another generation. In the past, when the life span was short & infant mortality was high, genes that were able to stimulate a young girl to become pregnant as soon as she could bear a child had a better chance of spreading than genes prompting more demure behavior." --- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi 1993 _The Evolving Self_ pg 65 |
