"If citizens could vote themselves money without taxing themselves, Jefferson's whole system could easily fall to the ground. The safeguards he envisaged would be destroyed. Moreover, he foresaw clearly many of the evils which practically unrestricted immigration for a century or more, according to Hamilton's theory, were to bring upon us. There is no use in trying to rebuild history on the bases of an IF but in looking back at some of the results of our huge immigration, such as the rapid growth of cities, the hordes of votes which could be bought, the rise of the boss, the insane rush to [use] our natural resources owing in part to too rapid increase in population, involving also the developent of the get-rich-quick mentality with the lowering of moral standards and respect for law, we may agree with Jefferson that the country would have been better off with a slower development attendant upon the natural increase of the stock then in America." --- James Truslow Adams 1936 _The Living Jefferson_ pg152 |
"...the costs off end-of-life care have soared. They presently account for about 11% of the total health-care budget and 27% of the Medicare budget -- about $1,674 per Medicare enrollee per year as of 2002." --- Charles Murray 2006 _In Our Hands: A Plan to [Eradicate or Entrench the Illfare] State_ pg42 (citing Center to Advance Palliative Care) |

Except that computer people use 2 as a base raised to multiples of powers of 10, instead of 10 raised to multiples of powers of 3 because powers of 2 are handier for them, but they also want to stay somewhat close to the values of 10 most folks are used to.

"Dependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition. While we have land to labour then, let us never wish to see our citizens occupied at a work-bench or twirling a distaff. Carpenters, masons, smiths, are wanting in husbandry: but for the general operations of manufacture, let our work-shops remain in Europe. It is better to carry provisions and materials to workmen there, than bring them to the provisions and materials, the with them their manners and principles. The loss by the transportation of commodities across the Atlantic will be made up in happiness and permanence of government. The mobs of great cities add just so much to the support of pure government, as sores do to the strength of the body." --- Thomas Jefferson (quoted in James Truslow Adams 1936 _The Living Jefferson_ pg167; citing Thomas Jefferson and Paul Leicester Ford 1892 _Writings of Thomas Jefferson_ vol3 pp268f) |
