"What, Sir is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty... Whenever governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins." --- Eldridge Gerry (during floor debate over the 2nd amendment) |

"A culture different even in origin from the law-and-liberty tradition of the Anglosphere naturally has anyway, among its other deficiencies, a much stronger addiction to etatism. The most striking current example of bureaucratic extravagance and decadence is, of course, the EU. Not that it appears to be viable in the longer run. Brussels is not Byzantium. But for now the European Union is the supreme attempt to build a regulationist super-state." --- Robert Conquest 2005 _The Dragons of Expectation: Reality and Delusion in the Course of History_ pg79 |
"That the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves & their own state, or the United States, or for the purpose of killing game; & no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed, or real danger of public injury from individuals; & as standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; & that the military shall be kept under strict subordination to & be governed by the civil powers." --- "The Address & Reasons of Dissent of the Minority of the Convention of the State of Pennsylation to their Constituents" (quoted in John P. Kaminski & Gaspare J. Saladino 1984 _The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution_ vol 3 pg 19; quoted in Clayton E. Cramer 1994 _For the Defense of Themselves & the State_ pg 35) |

Except that computer people use 2 as a base raised to multiples of powers of 10, instead of 10 raised to multiples of powers of 3 because powers of 2 are handier for them, but they also want to stay somewhat close to the values of 10 most folks are used to.

"From thousands of DNA samples from all over Europe we knew that, on average, Ursulans have 2.25 mutations in their mitochondrial DNA compaed to the DNA of Ursula herself. That puts the age of the clan at 2.25*20K = 45K years. We arrived at Ursula's own location in Greece by looking to see where the clan today is both the most frequent and at its most diverse. So long as there was good archaeological or climate evidence that the location was inhabited, or at least habitable, at that time, then that was where we placed the matriarch... From the DNA fragments now displayed on the map of Ireland, I could see that almost exactly 10% of Irish men and women are the diect maternal descendants of Ursula, each carrying her DNA modified by the occasional mutation. Converting that proportion of 10% to actual numbers of peopel means that of the total population of 5.7M there are roughly 570K Ursulans in all of Ireland... we have the mDNA sequences of 91 Ursulans from a total of 921 Irish samples... we found only 3 people who have Ursula's sequence unmodified by genetic change... Of the other Irish Ursulans, soem have 1 change on the 'pure' Ursulan background -- I all them 1st-generation Ursulans. There are 22 of them... 23 2nd-generation, 26 3rd-generation, 10 4th-generation, 5 5th-generation, 1 6th-generation and 1 7th-generation Ursulan." --- Bryan Sykes 2006 _Saxons, Vikings, and Celts: The Genetic Roots of Britain and Ireland_ pp150-152 |
