"A metallic money, the augmentation or diminution of the quantity of metal available for which is independent of deliberate human intervention, is becoming the modern monetary ideal. The significance of adherence to a metallic-money system lies in the freedom of the value of money from state influence that such a system guarantees." --- Ludwig von Mises 1934 _The Theory of Money & Credit_ pp 269-270 |

"Si quid jus non esset rogarier, eius ea lege nihilum rogatum." (If there is in this bill, whose approval I am requesting of you, anything that is not legal, your approval of it is to be considered as not requested.) --- Marcus Tullius Cicero reporting standard legal clause in proposed bills (quoted in Bruno Leoni 1991 _Freedom & the Law_ pg 85) |
"But, like so much that has been said by the intelligentsia on so many subjects, the notion that 'war solves nothing' had less to do with any empirical evidence than with its consonance with the vision of the anointed, which in turn has had much to do with the exaltation of the anointed. Had the battle of Lepanto in 1571 or the battle of Waterloo in 1815 gone the other way, this could be a very different world today... There have, of course, been futile wars in which all the nations on both sides ended up far worse off than before... But no one would make the blanket statement that medical science 'solves nothing' because many people die despite treatment and some die because of wrong treatment or even from the remote risks of vaccinations. In short, mundane specifics are more salient in evaluating any particular war than are the sweeping, abstract and dramatic pronouncements so often indulged in by the intelligentsia." --- Thomas Sowell 2010 _Intellectuals & Society_ pg255 |

Except that computer people use 2 as a base raised to multiples of powers of 10, instead of 10 raised to multiples of powers of 3 because powers of 2 are handier for them, but they also want to stay somewhat close to the values of 10 most folks are used to.

"Delusions of almost all types respond to the same medications, which are dopamine blocking agents. This suggests that delusions of all types depend on the same physiological process. That is, there must be a common pathway through which preoccupations assume a delusional mantle, & that common pathway must involve dopamine neurons... Apparently, dopamine blocking agents exert their anti-psychotic effects, including their effects on delusions, by blocking neuro-transmission from meso-cortical & meso-limbic dopamine tracts. The meso-cortical tract terminates in the frontal lobe... The meso-limbic tract terminates on limbic structures that appear to regulate affect." --- Brant Wenegrat 1990 _SocioBiological Psychiatry_ pp 78-79 (citing Wernicke, L. Binswanger 1958; I.
