To many observers, the 'executive actions' opinion of DoJ was not simply flawed, but crafted with a grim determination to arrive at the conclusion the department's political masters desired. And it is that opinion, and the actions it gave the go-ahead to, that has landed the [Obummer regime] squarely in the middle of legal proceedings now before the supreme court..."

But Palantir has 4 other founders, all of whom appear to be American natives. There are lots of immigrants living in the USA -- they make up 17% of the age-25 and over population -- so we would expect many to be involved in founding companies even if their innovative spirit were unexceptional on average. It would be better to know the percentage of all the co-founders of those 87 companies who are immigrants... The 2015 March Current Population Survey shows that of employed immigrants 25 and older, 11.4% are self-employed compared to 11.1% of natives. When we include part-time self-employment, the total self-employment rate rises to 12.8% for natives and 12.4% for immigrants. In terms of company size, about 19% of self-employed natives have 10 or more workers, compared to 16% for immigrant companies. None of these differences is particularly large or striking. Even to the extent that brilliant, tech-savvy immigrants are boosting our economy, that is a case for the limited entry of 'Einsteins', not for mass immigration... amnesty, guest workers, birthright citizenship, and extended-family reunification – all policies that bring substantial numbers of low-skill immigrants, but not many captains of industry. Tellingly, just one out of the 60 immigrant co-founders (1.7%) identified by the NFAP is from Latin America, even though 52.5% of immigrants age 25 and over in the USA are from that region. So although immigration certainly brings benefits as well as costs, Americans need to be careful about designing a policy that works as intended."

"...The European prime ministers probably are not steady readers of our blogs and came to the hire-Turkey decision all on their own. This deal to stem some of the flow of refugees from Syria and other nations reminded me of a World War 2 model regarding 'refugees' that Europe (and the USA) seem to be [pointedly, studiously] ignoring. When I moved to the DC suburbs in 1961 as a very junior member of the Kennedy administration, I had a neighbor, then in his late forties, who was a career employee of the Defense Department. He had been a midshipman in the Polish Navy when World War 2 broke out and, luckily for him, he was on the only ship in that little Navy that was in the Atlantic when Hitler invaded his home country in 1939. He promptly joined the British Navy and served throughout the war. Similarly, French refugees from Hitler played a major role in the Free French forces that helped the Allies ultimately defeat the Axis. They were led by Gen. Charles de Gaulle. I may be wrong about this, but my sense is that the Free French must have been largely, if not totally, funded by the United States and Britain, just as my Polish neighbor was paid by the Brits. So why is there not a Western-funded refugee counterpart to the existing Free Syrian Army -- the Syrian Refugee Army, say -- consisting of young men in Europe who are opposed to the regime in Syria and/or to ISIL? As we can see on TV nightly there are many young men among the refugees who might well -- particularly if their families were cared for -- enlist in the fight against the forces that caused them to be refugees in the first place. One of the missing ingredients this time around is the lack of a Charles de Gaulle, an enormously self-confident fellow who found himself in London at the Fall of France and quickly proclaimed that he was the ranking French officer (he was a brigadier-general at the time) in the Free World. He turned out to be a pain to both FDR and Churchill, but his forces were highly useful in WW2. The CIA could probably find (and help create) such a leader and quietly assist him to organize a Syrian Refugee Army (or perhaps the 'Free Middle East Army', considering that most of the new 'refugees' in Europe aren't Syrian) from among the refugee populations now in Europe. As decisions are being made about who can stay in Europe, and who will be returned to Asia, one of the variables could be that if a young man enlisted in the Refugee Army, his immediate family, not his extended family, would be granted temporary refugee status as long as he stayed in the army. If he died in the war, the family's status would become permanent, as it would be when the war ends. Does that sound like an indentured army? Well, maybe, but it would be not much worse than our H-1B program, where all the benefits of indenture go to big [corporations' executives, board members, and a little to other investors] and none to the nation. Such a Refugee Army would cost some money, but presumably would be much, much less unpopular with the USA public than sending in USA troops again. Ms. Merkel might welcome such a system as well. And tens of thousands of more boots on the ground -- Arabic speaking ones -- could make a big difference in Syria. A final point: As I noted in December, the Muslim states and statelets in Europe (Albania, Bosnia, and Kosovo) have not been reported as lifting a finger to help their fellow Muslims among the refugees -- despite the way the West came to the rescue of Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo a generation ago. I have seen nothing since to dispute that statement. Why don't we ask Wesley Clark, the American general in charge of rescuing Kosovo, to pay a visit to those nations and press them to be helpful to the West? I am sure he would agree to such a mission."

But Politifact didn't go far enough. Was Edison really 'the founder' of General Electric? Not according to General Electric. The company was a merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Company, meaning the founders of General Electric were 4 people, 3 of whom were born in the USA: Thomas Edison, Charles Coffin, and Edwin Houston. The lone foreigner was Elihu Thomson, born in England in 1853. He moved to the Philadelphia with his family at age 5. Does this tell us much of anything about what good immigration policy should be today? Not really... Verizon, founded in 2000, is counted as an immigrant-founded company because Alexander Graham Bell (born in [Edinburgh,] Scotland in 1847) jointly founded the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 alongside Gardiner G. Hubbard (the Boston-born trustee and president) and Thomas Sanders. Later, Bell created the American Telephone and Telegraph Company to handle long-distance calls, and it stayed in business as a monopoly until it was broken up in 1984, creating a number of so-called Baby Bells, including one called Bell Atlantic. Years later, in 2000, Bell Atlantic merged with GTE Corporation, forming Verizon. These are the [fantastic] steps one must go through to conclude that Verizon is an 'immigrant-founded' company. Politifact notes that they went with Bell 'because the report's authors couldn't identify anyone else as a founder'..."
