The number being gigged/ temped/ contingently employed/ on short-term contract/ consulting/ scrabbling, the number seeking real/ "traditional" long-term employment and the number of real/ traditional long-term jobs employers are seeking to fill are not reported.
BLS does not track the numbers gigged, temped, bodyshopped, on contract, contingent or consulting positions who would prefer "real", "traditional", long-term employment... though about once every 15-25 years someone writes an article for the _Monthly Labor Review_.
Men constitute 48.75% of the civilian, non-institutionalized population 16-years or older; women 51.25%; "blacks" 13.04%; "Asians" 6.65%; "whites" 76.31%; "Hispanics"/"Latinos" 18.28%.
In 1850 (the year before the American Party, later called the Know Nothings) was founded, USA population foreign-born was 9.68%; in 1860, 13.16%; in 1870, 14.44%; in 1880, 13.3%, by which time the USA frontiers were no more & we had begun to "in-fill", i.e. crowd, and thus should have begun trimming back immigration & student & guest-work visas; in 1890, 14.77%; in 1900, the percentage of population foreign-born was 13.6%; in 1910, 14.7%; in 1920, 13.2%; in 1930, 11.6%; in 1940, 8.8%; in 1950, 6.9%; in 1960, 5.4%; in 1970, 4.7%; in 1980, 6.2%; in 1990, 7.9%; in 2000, 11.1%; in 2001, 11.38%; in 2002, 11.5%; in 2003, 11.7%; in 2004, 11.8%; in 2005, 12.1%; in 2006, 12.1%; in 2007, 12.6%; in 2008, 12.5%; in 2009, 12.2%; in 2010, 12.9%; in 2011, 13%; in 2012, 13.1%... 14.3% (47M) in 2022 April... projected by census bureau to be 15.2% by 2030, 16.1% by 2040.
foreign-born, non-institutionalized population 16 years old and older (both citizens & non-citizens) = 48.547M
native, non-institutionalized population 16 years old and older = 220.741M
civilian, non-institutionalized population 16 years and older (CivPop16+) = 269.289M
foreign-born as percentage of CivPop16+ = 18.03%
natives as percentage of CivPop16+ = 81.97%
percentage of foreign-born, non-institutionalized population 16 years and older who are employed = 64%
percentage of native, non-institutionalized population 16 years and older who are employed = 59.3% (down from record high of 88.2% in 1929 January, 81.3% in 1939 January, 81.6 in 1948 January. 80.8% in 1949 January, & up from the record worst since 2007 of about 51.2% during the Wuhan disease hysteria lock-downs).
Average duration of unemployment while actively seeking work is 23.7 weeks (about 5.3 months), as compared with the best on record since 1948 of 6.6 weeks; while the
Median duration of unemployment is 10.7 weeks (about 2.469 months), as compared with the best on record since 1967 of 3.6 weeks.
Average duration of unemployment while actively seeking full-time work (gigs/temp/contingent/contract or long-term) is 25 weeks (about 5.7 months), as compared with the best on record since 1977 of 8.5 weeks; while the current
Median is 12.1 weeks (over 2.8 months), as compared with the best on record since 1977 of 4 weeks.
From what I've read (news articles, conversations with reporters, "human resources" professionals discussions, etc.), giggers/ bodyshops/ staffing services/ PEOs/ and employment agencies categorize everyone unemployed longer than about 4 weeks (it is tunable; you can set it for 6 months or 12 months or whatever) as "hard core unemployed" or "unemployable", refuse to consider placing them. They have their screening software send such resumes directly to the trash-bin, never to be digitized, data extracted by parsers, seen (nor heard of) by an honest employment broker or hiring manager. And then they claim there are no "qualified" (wink wink nudge nudge) job-seekers. But it is sooooo "efficient"... well, aside from all that wasted talent and productivity. So, the estimated current duration of unemployment while seeking long-term employment ranges from 3 weeks to 30 years, depending on field of work, numbers of cheap, pliant, low-skilled guest-workers with flexible ethics who have been admitted, etc.
October
U-1 unemployment rate was 1.6%.
U-2 unemployment rate was 1.8%.
U-3 unemployment rate was 3.9%.
U-4 unemployment rate was 4.2%.
U-5 unemployment rate was 4.8%.
U-6 unemployment rate was 7.3%.
unemployment rate for those seeking full-time work was 3.9%.
unemployment rate for those seeking part-time work was 4.2%.
unemployment rate for men was 3.9%.
386K are classified by BLS as "marginally attached to the labor force", want employment, searched for work, but no available work was found, and thus are discouraged;
5.330M want employment now but are not employed,
1.547M are classified by BLS as "want a job now, available to work now, marginally attached to the labor-force, searched for employment in the previous year (believe no employment is available)"; &
252K men are classified by BLS as "Not in labor force - Want a job now, Marginally attached, Discouraged workers, Men", "Discouragement over job prospects (believes no job is available)", so even some people who ARE "actively seeking work" are classified by BLS as "not in the labor force" (NILF) and "NOT actively seeking work", thus muddying the waters, ambiguating, fogging, blowing smoke, obfuscating, misleading, disinforming, deceiving.
For veterans, the employed ÷ population ratio (employment rate or work rate) is at about 46.3% (was 60.7% in 2023 July; was 52.9% in 2006 July; minimum on record since 2006 May was 42.6%; maximum=best since 2006 May was 54.1%).
It is also interesting that the employed ÷ population per-centages for those with at least the equivalent of bachelor's degrees, those with some college, & those with HS diplomas or equivalent have been falling for several decades, while the employed÷population per-centages for those without a HS diploma have been generally rising. This is another case where it would have been nice to have such data going back to, e.g. 1900 to have decent base-lines, but what older statistics exist are incommensurable. (Employed ÷ population per-centages
for those with at least the equivalent of bachelor's degrees were 71.3% in 2024 October (best since 1992 January was 79.8%, but trending down);
for those with some college were 61.2% in 2024 October; (best since 1992 January was 73%, but trending down);
for those with a HS diploma were 54.8% in 2024 October; (best since 1992 January was 63.5%, but trending down);
for those without a HS diploma were 45.3% in 2024 October; (best since 1992 January was 45.7%, but trending very gradually up).
Neither the USA Department of Labor nor the Bureau of Labor Statistics track, & they seem not to be interested in, employer investment in training & relocation of talent within the USA (neither current nor changes over time), nor the intensity, effort, time, investment, etc. for recruiting vs. filtering out job-seekers... because it would be soooo difficult to add 2 questions to the on-line Establishment Survey (and 1 check-box to job sites)... as employers try to avoid hiring USA citizens, & lobby more for cheap, young, pliant, low-skilled (untested, unmeasured) foreign labor with flexible ethics (to tweak those privacy-violating apps, big data harvesting, and selective communications suppression & promotion gimmicks).
For 20-24 year olds aggregate employed ÷ population ratio is at 66.1%
25-29 year olds it's 79.9%
30-34 = 80.8%
35-39 = 82.3%
40-44 = 81.8%
45-49 = 81.3%
50-54 = 79.1%
55-59 = 72.3%
60-64 = 56.7%
65-69 = 33.1%
70-74 = 20%
75+ = 8.93%
Those should all be 5-15 percentage points higher. Employers should be actively seeking people out, training people, relocating people as demand levels and operations shift from place to place within the USA.

" Bucks County, just outside Philadelphia, isn’t red -- it's a swing county that went for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by less than one point in 2016 and President Joe Biden by more than four points in 2022. Someone on the ground, however, seems to have seen something he did not like.
